VIRGINIA BUTTONWEED (Diodia virginiana)

WHAT FLORIDA NATIVE PLANT IS BLOOMING TODAY?: VIRGINIA BUTTONWEED (Diodia virginiana)

Sprawling; madder family. Considered a weed by many. it grows in the margins of my pond and along side the culvert where many pollinators take advantage of its pretty white flowers. While it generally hugs the ground, this particular plant was growing taller reaching out through the competing sedges.

Seeds are a nutlet, enjoyed by doves and its relative poor joe is a recommended species in Arkansas University’s Bringing Back Bobwhites publication http://www.uaex.edu/Other_Areas/publications/PDF/MP506.pdf
