GROUNDSEL TREE; SEA MYRTLE (Baccharis halimifolia)

WHAT FLORIDA NATIVE PLANT IS BLOOMING TODAY?: GROUNDSEL TREE; SEA MYRTLE (Baccharis halimifolia)

This plant is dioecious and the photo depicts the female of the species. Also called Saltbush or Silverling.

Works as a specimen tree or can be pruned to create a hedge. Somewhat aggressive.

Larval host for Grounsel Beetle. Leaves can be used to make a dye.

  1. Oh this thing!!!!! Not one of my faves! When I moved in to this house, the backyard had been taken over by these dang things…one by one i removed them and dug a large flower garden in the area where several had been firmly entrenched. Every so often a shoot still pokes up—which I PROMPTLY remove!
