AMERICAN BURNWEED; FIREWEED (Erechtites hieraciifolius)

WHAT FLORIDA NATIVE PLANT IS BLOOMING TODAY?: AMERICAN BURNWEED; FIREWEED (Erechtites hieraciifolius)

Tall weedy annual plant that has prolific amounts of seeds, so very aggressive. Buds never really open to reveal a flower; seedheads resemble that of dandelion or wild lettuce.

Listed in Floridas Incredible Wild Edibles by Dick Deuerling as a salad ingredient (leaves) or potherb although there are mixed reviews on taste: http://www.eattheweeds.com/erechtites-hieracifolia-edible-pile-driver-2/

The lovebug seems to be onboard with it.

  1. I always wondered if I was just missing seeing the buds open! Now I know that’s not the case!

Someone remarked that the White-M hairstreak butterfly has a particular fondness for this as a nectar source. that butterfly was an addition to my lifelist last year and I’ve already seen them around this year. IT WORKS!
